Recent Google uppercuts:
  • Google public DNS: point your DNS servers to 8.8.8.8 + 8.8.4.4 to enhance security, validity and speed of your domain name requests. No OpenDNS reaction so far. Privacy concerns 2009.
  • Offline Gmail graduated from Labs.
  • The Google Phone (Nexus One) will drop in January. HTC hardware, Android software, no carrier deals.
If you still think Google is nothing but a search engine, you're a fool.

The baddest thing around town

I will be missing out on (500) days of summer @ the 2009 Ghent film festival.
Pretty stoked for De Helaasheid Der Dingen.
Don't know if I can wait till I get my hands on Californication S02, might watch S01 again.

Dignity and teeth

It's been a while, update.
  • The Tiny Vipers Ghent show was sweaty and dreamy. Some indie fag called "tweezie" or "tweedy" spilled beer on my pants while holding his cig in a vertical position.Other hipsters sat there listening with their eyes closed. They're either fools or drugged out.
  • Tunes recently: The Suicide File, Deftones, Tigers Jaw, Saves The Day, Bat For Lashes, Weezer, Jason Molina.
  • Trix yesterday. The stage manager/sound guy is incredible. I laughed hard when he lit the hairy War Hungry guitar players cigarette with a flashlight.
RZL DZL had line-up issues as expected. Played 6 songs or so, not one with a proper ending. People were eating pancakes in the pit.
War Hungry played about the same amount of songs and featured a mixed bunch of band members and the don hoodrack haircut. The guitar players "belly/face/instrument-first" dive was wild.
Moshpit was st00pid. Municipal Waste was ok. Fished me a Title Fight longsleeve out of the hoodrack shirt collection, picture proof in TOS#5.

  • New Gmail themes, currently using the "High Score" theme despite its Nintendo feel.
    high score
  • Amusing spam mail subjects this week: "clever method for bigger pole", "Monsters in de diepe zee?", "Durable woody in pants" and my favorite "Become her megadriller".
  • 4gifs.com
  • VIP encounters: Urbanus has angel hair; Kabouter Lui looks like a regular adult when wearing regular clothes; M.Schoenaerts is a chick magnet; a César award winning actress stroked my hair, I had no idea what was happening.

A wish for things that work

  • One Eight Seven demo
I don't know too much about this band. They were a short-lived deathmetal band from the H8000 area in Belgium around 1998-1999. Their singer was this small, cute, nice girl called Kathy 187 who was at pretty much all the H8000 shows at the time. I saw them once, at this show in Eeklo where on the day of the show they persuaded the organizer to let them do a short set. We'd only heard rumors about 187 and were curious what Kathy sounded like live... Well, we quickly learned she had a massive grunt, something we did not expect. Not too long after I picked up this demo, and I've not seen or heard 187 since. Members went on to other H8000 bands such as Edge Of Life and All My Sins. Anyways, this is a pretty decent demo, so check it out!

  • Pepsi & Coca-Cola logo time line.

  • The Mackenzie feat. Jessy - All I Need, will be featured on the next car mix cd. Night-inspired, nightly-listening only.
Different versions exist though. Gotta make a choice.
This guy had no problem choosing at all:"BEST Version. I listened to it for 10 hours non stop. SUPERB Song !!!!!!!"

  • Garden State was a pretty cool movie.

  • Internet censorship in Belgium became reality today. Belgian authorities asked providers to redirect DNS requests for a (.com) website that links to privacy-violating content (pedophile names).
Privacy violation sucks but censorship sucks even more.
Adds to the story: kiddy porn found on Marc Dutroux' prison computer.

Android

One of my co-workers is a tech/gadget freak, sporting a Nokia N95. We have the nerdiest conversations about smartphones & firmware updates.
Recently I convinced him to use the Nokia Sports Tracker for the noble purpose of contributing to the OpenStreetMap project.
So we took off for a ride through Bruges and uploaded the GPS trace to the OSM website. Registering on websites sucks so my BugMeNot Firefox extension came in handy again.

Anyway, Google announced the first phone running the Android OS but forgot about the details in the promo pics:

On the outside

Google decided to release their very own browser, called Chrome. Tech details: Webkit based (just like Safari), auto-completion (using the insane Google search database), one process for each tab,...

Will be testing this piece of software soon.

The august/september transition in public transportation life hits like a sledgehammer to the face. Noticed this week:
- a 14-year old girl showing off a pair of fluffy handcuffs
- a black man nearly snoring his nose off (actually thought it was a candid camera prank, hilarious!)

Ipod plays: Staind, By A Thread, Ten Foot Pole, City And Colour.
